Text in Latin. 3 neat ink ownership names on front free endpaper and 2 names crossed out together with another deleted name at foot of title page. Speckled edges. Full vellum binding with some soiling and brown gilt title label. A very good copy. Giovanni Pietro Maffei (1533-1603), a skilled Latinist, was the Jesuits' official historian of their missions overseas, particularly in the East and Japan. His very popular life of the founder of the Society of Jesus was first published in 1585 and subsequently in many later editions.
